Smart SEO Scanner: a quick, honest look at a web page

· Updated · By

An SEO report is a starting point, not a verdict. Here's what Smart SEO Scanner checks and how to read a report without chasing the score.

Sometimes you just want a quick read on a page: is the title too long, are images missing alt text, is the page slow, are there broken links? Smart SEO Scanner is the tool I run for that. You enter a URL and get a scored report.

What the SEO scanner looks at

The report covers on-page basics (titles, descriptions, headings), content, links, speed and a range of technical checks, with a plain explanation of each item so you know why it matters. You can also compare two sites side by side, which is handy for seeing how a page stacks up against a competitor's. Reports are stored, so you can come back and see whether your changes moved anything.

How to read a report without chasing the score

Scores are useful for motivation and terrible as a goal. A few suggestions:

Some issues are very common. The 2024 Web Almanac found that only 43% of mobile sites had good Core Web Vitals, compared with 54% on desktop, and 16% of pages lazy-loaded their main (LCP) image, which slows it down.

  • Fix what affects people first. Slow pages, broken links and missing mobile support hurt visitors directly. Start there.
  • Then fix what affects understanding. A clear title, a real description and a sensible heading structure help both search engines and AI tools understand what the page is about.
  • Treat the rest as a checklist, not a crisis. A missing favicon isn't why you're not ranking.
  • Remember what a scanner can't see. No automated tool can judge whether your content actually answers the question better than anyone else's. That's still the biggest factor, and it's on you.

I use quick scans like this before deeper work, as a way to catch the obvious problems so the time goes into the problems that aren't obvious.
